Cyclothem

.

Each nonmarine-marine sequence is called a cyclothem. A typical Pennsylvanian cyclothem contains 10 units. The lower half consist of nonmarine sediments, topped by a coal deposit. The resource used is coal. When was the Alleghanian Oregony and what mountains formed?Additional limestone and shale beds may be present in some cyclothems. A good example is the Oread Limestone which outcrops in the Leavenworth and Atchison, Kansas vicinity (see top part of upper section, above). The fundamental cyclothem triad is represented by the Plattsmouth Limestone (1), Heebner Shale (2), and Leavenworth Limestone (3).

Mineralogy. Studies of insoluble residues obtained by acid treatment of rocks belonging to the Red Eagle cyclothem showed that clays are the most abundant minerals. Clay is the bulk of the shale in the Johnson and Roca, regardless of color, and is an important constituent of the Red Eagle Limestone. In the late Moscovian-early Gzhelian (late Desmoinesian-early Virgilian) succession in the midcontinent United States, several major cyclothems are correlated, by both conodont species in common and cyclothem scale, with cyclothems in Russia (Moscow Basin) and Ukraine (Donets Basin), and the remaining cyclothems fit into the framework by ...them ; since seatclays usually occur in every cyclothem, unless they can be specifically " labelled " their stratigraphical significance is diminished. The late Mesozoic tectonics of the North China Craton (NCC) and its adjacent regions were characterized by a general lithospheric extension and remarked by extensional dome structures, such as the metamorphic core complexes, syn-tectonic plutons, rolling-hinge structures, and widespreadgraben/half graben basins.PSPetrographic Characteristics of Maximum-Transgressive and Regressive Deltaic Sandstones of Upper-Pennsylvanian (Virgilian) Oread Cyclothem, NE Oklahoma* Lu Zhu1 and Wan Yang2. Our study tests this hypothesis by petrographic characterization of 2 regressive Snyderville fluvial, 2 maximum-transgressive Heebner deltaic, and 2 regressive Elgin deltaic sandstones of the Oread cyclothem. 50 point-counts for each sample document composition and texture of framework grains, porosity, type and amount of cement and matrix. The typical or "ideal" cyclothem (Figure 2) consists of 10 beds symmetrically developing from a non-marine sandstone or shale (0, 1a) up to a fusulinid limestone (5), representing the culmination of normal marine transgression, and then back to a non-marine shale and sandstone bed (9), representing the regressive marine phase.
