Arthrophycus

The Arthrophycus ichnogenus was first described by Harlan (1831) as Fucoides alleghaniensis, attributed to algal fossils recorded in Silurian strata, in southeastern Pennsylvania (USA). Hall (1852) redescribed Harlan's fossils as Arthrophycus, but the first reinterpretation of these structures as a trace fossil was presented by Nathorst (1881)..

The ichnogenus Arthrophycus, characteristic of Ordovician-Silurian sedimentary rocks, is described by the first time in the Pyrenees. This ichnogenus is located in fine-grained sandstones of the upper part of the Cava Formation, on the Upper Ordovician rocks of the southern slope of the la Rabassa Dome, close to the Andorra-Spain border. Ichnofacies can provide information about water depth, salinity, turbidity and energy. In general, traces found in shallower water are vertical, those in deeper water are more horizontal and patterned. [1] This is partly because of the relative abundance of suspended food particles, such as plankton, in the shallower waters of the photic zone ...Arthrophycus brongniartii (Harlan, 1832) is common in marginal-marine deposits in the Silurian Red Mountain Formation of Alabama. The ichnospecies, the second to be named in North America, is revived and emended after long disuse. ….
